Dorm Room Safety Tips For The Smart College Student!

Doesn’t it feel great to finally be at college and out on your own? Living in a dorm is a great prelude to renting your first apartment, and trains you to keep an eye out in ensuring your valuables are safe and secure. Yet, there’s a certain comfort zone surrounding dorm life, but unfortunately you simply can’t trust everyone on campus. We’re here from SpyTown.com Security Camera Systems to guide you along the path to a safe, responsible, and fun dorm life throughout your college years.

Lock It Up

Sure, you’re friends with everyone on your floor, and you couldn’t imagine they’d ever steal from you. It’s never a comforting thought, but it’s always important to not be too trusting when it comes to safety – you simply never know what people are capable of doing. Commit to locking your dorm room door when you leave the room, even if it’s just to walk down the hall to the bathroom or over to your friend’s room. A thief needs only a few minutes to get into your room and scoop up that expensive laptop on your desk.

Check The Peephole

Hear a knock on your door? Before you open that door, check the peephole to see who’s there! It takes just a second, and gives you control over who you let into your room. It’s scary, but if there was an intruder at your door, all he needs is for you to open the door a crack and he can force his way into your room.

Stash Your Valuables Away

It’s still important to keep your valuables locked away even if you lock your door. Thieves can always pick locks and your roommate could have friends over that perhaps don’t have the best morals. Visit your local hardware store and pick up a small safe – stash your expensive jewelry, electronics, and any credit cards/cash you aren’t carrying on you. It never hurts knowing your valuables are secure!

Safety Doesn’t Take A Break

If your college has various “breaks” throughout the year, such as Winter Break or Spring Break, take your electronics, jewelry, cash, and any other important or expensive valuables home with you over break. It may mean lugging an extra bag or a laptop case, but it’s a lot less frustrating than coming back to find your digital camera stolen!

Your college years should be nothing but happy and fun, and okay, perhaps a little bit stressful from that heavy course load you’re carrying. Yet, it’s always important to prepare for the unexpected, and keeping your dorm room as safe and secure as possible goes a long way in ensuring your possessions stay yours! Here’s to a wonderful four years ahead from SpyTown.com Home Security Cameras!
