The Society was founded in Pontigny, France in the 1860s, with responsibility for overseeing Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy until 1901 when the French government forced religious orders to disperse by demanding they relinquish their property and many other rights. The Archives holds a related collection called the Theological Rare Book Collection containing 255 volumes of pre-1800 printed books. The collection includes six incunables or books printed before 1501 and ten books bearing the seal of the SSE library at Pontigny and, overall, it comprises a nice example of a theological, or perhaps monastic, Renaissance library.
